Eggface Meet & Greet: 'Twas the night before...

Tomorrow is our Southern California Weight Loss Surgery Meet & Greet. I'm so excited to meet & make some new friends and catch up with old pals. Yesterday I finished stuffing the goodie bags. I'll be sure to snap a picture of the contents today and share it after the event. The contents are EPIC and if you are weight loss surgery peep you'll want to be in the know about the products for sure. I sat on the patio yesterday evening and finished the giveaway prizes. There are 20 prizes if I remember correctly. Here's a photo of just some of them...

Reminders to those attending:

*It is a FREE (but SOLD OUT) event. If you missed out we'll see you next year.

*We are in a great building (The Harveston Center) with oodles of chairs & tables but we are right next to a lake with great paved walking trails (approx. 20 minutes to walk around the whole lake) and a park so bring some lawn chairs if you want to sit outside and enjoy the sunny day or are staying after they kick us out at 3, we also have a private patio area so we can set up chairs there too.

*There are no speakers/Dr's/plastic surgeons just a group of pre-ops/post-ops getting together to meet & make new friends and reconnect with old for support and friendship. Lots of stories, laughter, & pictures on the agenda!

*Bring your before (if applicable) pictures to share

*There's plenty of free parking

*Light weight loss surgery friendly refreshments will be served

*The first 50 (WLS post/pre-ops only) will receive a goodie bag filled with AWESOME products

*We'll have drawings for giveaway prizes

*Dress is super casual (I'm doing jeans & a t-shirt)

*We're having a protein & vitamin exchange so bring the stuff you hate. One post-ops monkey's you-know-what is another's yummy treat ;)

Please have no fear or anxiety (a trait I think many of us wls-ers have) about coming you will have a GREAT time!

Behold the turtle. He only makes progress when he sticks his neck out.

This guy tried to share my bento lunch last week when I was at the lake.

Watch out for him.

My Before & After - Weight Loss Surgery

-158 lbs
Size 28 to 4 (8 before plastics)
All co-morbidities resolved (GERD, severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure)
Off all 8 medications I was on pre-op

*Weight Loss Surgery is not a solution for everyone* but it was the right one for me. It was the HEAD START I needed to change my life and I want to stress it goes hand in hand with HEALTHY EATING, DAILY EXERCISE and MOST IMPORTANTLY (and the hardest part IMHO) working on the HEAD stuff, the why's of why I got fat. This is a lifelong war versus obesity and having surgery was just one battle... everyday I wake up and fight.

Just 'cause I got the monkey off my back doesn't mean the circus has left town. The FIGHT is FOREVER!

My wish for all those new on this journey: that you will soon feel the same way I do about having weight loss surgery that it was the BEST GIFT I ever gave myself.

xo To all the fellow fighters!

Free, yeah right

Tuesday = Free Pastry Day at Starbucks and Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's

Remember: Nothing in life is free

Blueberry Streusel Muffin 360 cals, 33 g. sugar, 11 g. fat, 59 g. carbs
Blueberry Scone 460 cals, 17 g. sugar, 22 g, fat, 61 g. carbs
Reduced-Fat Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake 340 cals, 39 g. sugar, 9 g. fat, 62 g. carbs

...and in my pre weight loss surgery days I would have added a Venti Caramel Macchiato with Extra Caramel and Whipped Cream to those pastry #'s and consumed my days worth of cals, fat, carbs, & sugars in one meal... oh but I still would have had the other meals.

This Blueberry Muffin is sad because if you eat him you will have to spend about 70 minutes on the treadmill to make him disappear ;)

Heads up: It's Back...

The Eggface SEI Protein Discount Code is back for those of you who are unable to find my beloved Max or Ultimate Protein locally. You can order it online direct from the SEI website. Just type in: eggface2010 at checkout and you'll get 20% off your order.

I love SEI Max/Ultimate Protein and it's great for use in any of my weight loss surgery friendly dishes... Protein Ice Creams, Ice Cream Cakes, Protein Donuts, 5 Minute Protein Cakes, Protein Shakes and Smoothies and more.

Witchy Woman

I was going to be a scarecrow again because last year I was out of town for Halloween and none of my local pals saw it in person but I was sorting through some boxes and found my old witches cape so... I put together a witch costume and made an appearance at my friend's shindig last night. Good times.

I've had that witch cape forever. Let's see I've had it (err math in the morning) at least 20 years. I was a witch in my junior year of high school. I actually found a picture. Looking at this picture is when I know having weight loss surgery was the BEST GIFT I ever gave myself. Most people look at pictures from high school or college years longingly wishing they could have that body back. Well I'll just let the picture speak for itself...

Me: Halloween 1988

¨°º¤ø„My witchy spell...
Double, double toil and trouble.
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Liberatus Eradicatum Fatum from our Assums.
Alacazam!„ø¤º°¨

Have a Happy & Safe Halloween!

Rite of Passage

Well I completed a post weight loss surgery rite of passage. I renewed my passport.

Wow. What a difference 10 years and -158 pounds makes!

They are so darn expensive to renew. I held out till it was almost expired but I was starting to get questioned at the border.

Strawberry Storm

Yet another use for those Naked Nuggets (Breadless Chicken Nuggets) I reviewed the other day. This super yummy salad was lunch yesterday.

Shelly's Strawberry Fields Forever Chicken Salad

Mixed Greens
Fresh Strawberries, sliced
Herbed Goat Cheese, crumbled
Unsweetened Dried Cranberries
Sliced Almonds & Pistachios
Naked Nuggets, sliced
Storebought Sweet Onion or Poppy Seed Dressing

Saute nuggets till golden, slice into strips and set aside. Toss salad ingredients together. Add chicken. Drizzle with dressing.

I love these nuggets. Such a quick and versatile protein source. This was a great summery lunch and would be perfect to eat on a picnic or outside. Too bad our weather didn't cooperate with that idea. We had a huge freak storm yesterday... Thunder, Lightning & Hail! Take a look outside my kitchen window...

I was worried that my tomatoes wouldn't make it through the pelting but I just lost a few leaves and thankfully the little green babies are hanging on.

Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo! a common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day (that's September 16th.) The holiday actually commemorates the Mexican army's defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It's just a nice opportunity to celebrate the culture and people of Mexico which I gladly do.

Mexico gave me the gift of weight loss surgery and post-op plastic surgery and for that I am forever thankful. To those who say "You went where for surgery?! Are you crazy?" Damn right I did and I'd do it again in a nano-second. To the beautiful Mexican people that helped to give me my life back: Dr. Aguirre and his staff especially Rosella, Bambi (RIP), Alejandra and Sonia, Dr. Quiroz and his staff especially Jenny and Giselle, and Alonzo and the rest of the Lucerna staff... a heartfelt thank you and ¡Viva México!

So last week I got a notice on the door that Southern California Edison would be doing work in my area and I would have no electricity from 8 AM to 4 PM on Tuesday. I didn't think much about it then it hit me... uggh that's Cinco de Mayo. I have a gas stove but errr no pilot light. That meant no cooking indoors till after 4.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... I could NEVER be Amish. No hair dryer, no tunes, no computer, no COFFEE MAKER?! WTH?!

Plan B. I was able to make a festive lunch without the use of anything electric. Where there's a will there's a way.

Shelly's Tropical Shrimp Cocktail

1 pound Large Cooked Shrimp (21/25 count), peeled, deveined, tails off
1 Avocado, diced
1/2 cup Papaya Mango Salsa (I used Trader Joe's fresh)
1/2 cup Mild Fresh Salsa (Tomato Salsa)
dash of Kosher Salt

Toss all ingredients together and spoon into margarita glasses.

Mmmm and some BBQ'd Elote Corn...

How to make it: Grill Corn on the BBQ till golden. Wrap in foil with a pat of butter inside. Put back on the BBQ closed lid for 5 minutes. Open foil packet, careful not to get a steam burn. Sprinkle with Cotija Cheese. Light squeeze of lime if desired.

Fat Tuesday

To celebrate I made some yummy New Orleans inspired weight loss surgery friendly goodies...

Shelly's Muffuletta Roll-ups

1/4 pound Ham, thinly sliced
1/4 pound Genoa salami, thinly sliced
1/4 cup Whipped Cream Cheese
1/4 cup (plus a few for garnish) Spanish Pimento Stuffed Olives

Whiz cream cheese and olives in a mini food processor till smooth. Place 1 slice of salami on a plate, cover with 1 piece of ham, smear with a dollop of cream cheese olive mixture. Roll-up. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Andouille Sausages Skewers
Slices of Cajun Andouille Sausage sauteed and skewered. Served with a spicy mustard.

Shelly's Spring Shrimp Salad

1 bunch of Asparagus Spears
1 cup Frozen Peas
14 Large Cooked Shrimp, chopped
1 stalk of Celery, diced
3 1/2 oz. Fage Greek Yogurt (1/2 a container, I use 2%)
1 Tablespoon Cider Vinegar
1/4 Red Onion, diced
2 Tablespoons Fresh Dill, chopped
1 Anchovy Fillet, mashed (jarred packed in olive oil and salt are the best)
a few twists of Black Pepper

Hold both ends of each asparagus spear and bend. The tough part should snap right off. Toss those (or better yet compost.) Chop into 1" segments and steam along with the frozen peas for 2 minutes in the microwave. I use this nifty gadget. Remove from microwave and drop in ice water to stop the cooking and set the pretty green color. Drain. Toss with remaining ingredients and don't leave that anchovy out. They are in Caesar Dressing and you like that, right? LOL ;)

Later we're having a cup of Cafe Du Monde coffee and dessert...

Shelly's 5 Minute Sugar Free Banana Caramel Nut Cake with Bananas Foster Topping

1 Egg, beaten
3 Tablespoons Milk (I used Vanilla Soy)
2 Tablespoons Sugar Free Torani Syrup (I used SF Caramel)
2 Tablespoons Banana, mashed
2 Tablespoons Canola Oil
3 Tablespoons Multigrain Pancake Mix (I use this)
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg
1 Tablespoon Pecans, chopped
1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
Pinch salt
1 Measuring Cup or Microwave Safe Mug

In a measuring cup or microwave safe mug, Mix egg, milk, syrup, banana and oil and combine thoroughly. In a separate bowl, mix pancake mix, cinnamon, nutmeg, nuts, protein powder and salt. Tip dry into wet and stir till combined.

Nuke in microwave for 2 minutes*. *Microwave wattage varies. Mine takes 2:20 but start with 2 minutes and add 20 second increments if needed. Let it sit for three or so minutes (it pulls away from the sides) before tipping the cake onto a plate. Yields 4-5 slices.

This cake is soooo good! It totally gives me my banana bread fix. It's also great toasted.

Shelly's Non-Alcoholic No Sugar Added Bananas Foster Topping

1 Banana, sliced
1 teaspoon Butter
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Torani Syrup (I used SF Caramel)
dash Cinnamon
dash Nutmeg
2 Tablespoons Pecans, chopped

Heat butter and bananas in a non stick pan. Add syrup, nuts and seasonings. Toss lightly to coat and warm through. Top slices of my 5 Minute Sugar Free Banana Caramel Nut Cake with mixture.

Oh I have to share this funny Mardi Gras related story...

When I was teaching, my co-teacher was an African American woman named Donna. Hey Donna! Donna and I both love a good party... so we decided to have a little Mardi Gras celebration in the classroom. The children made masks, counted and charted with beads, told alligator stories, listened to Zydeco music and I made a King Cake at home that I brought in for the kids to try. We talked about the three colors of the icing sugar and what they represent: Purple (Justice), Green (Faith) and Gold (Power). I hid a traditional plastic baby under each piece of cake (so everyone had a little reminder of the day to take home) as the children discovered their hidden babies Donna and I had to laugh as they asked each other, "Did you find a Ms. Donna or a Ms. Michelle?"

So see you can celebrate without getting drunk on Hurricanes, flashing random men your boobies and ending up on one of those videos they sell on late night infomercials.

Though thanks to Dr. Q and Bio Oil I have damn good boobies for flashing ;)

Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez! Let The Good Times Roll!

Presidential Pizza Porn

It's President's Day. According to the White House chef, former President Dubya's favorite supper was "Cheeseburger Pizza." Finally something I agree with him on. It was pretty yummy.

Shelly's Cheeseburger Tortilla Pizza - Mission Carb Balance Whole Wheat Fajita Size Tortilla topped with browned Ground Beef (a little garlic thrown in), diced Green Onions, fresh Tomato, Cheddar Cheese and a dash of Seasoning Salt.

Variations: different Cheeses, add Pickle Slices, Thousand Island Dressing, sauteed Mushrooms & Onions, crumbled cooked Bacon.

Have a slice...

Click here for cooking instructions and more pizza porn inspiration.

Highlights of the Day:

* Ha. We should all be issued one of these the day we have weight loss surgery.

* A big storm is coming. I love weather. We don't get much of it in Southern California. Our weather is basically summer or not quite summer most of the time so it's nice to have something different. Gives me an excuse to break out the crock pot and make a stew too. It's good it's happening on a holiday too because there will be less vehicles on the road.

* Right now. Listening to tunes. Wrapped up in a warm fuzzy blanket. Sipping a yummy cup of Chocolate Covered Cherry Hot Cocoa. Mmmmm.

Heading North

There's still time to join us... Here's the 411

We'll be making (and of course) eating tons of holiday themed treats and sampling cool new products.

I'm sooooo excited to meet you guys! The BEST part of an OH event is turning "cyber" friends into "real world" pals.

If you are jonesing for food porn while I'm away be sure to scroll through the Eggface Archives over on the <--- left side of the screen or use the Search Feature under my before and after pics (type in a keywords like chicken, pizza, chocolate, zucchini and see what comes up)

See ya soon.

LA Wrap-up

So I'm almost done putting everything back into its place post-LA. I'm wounded so it didn't make it easy. Monday morning I broke my toe at the hotel. You know that hideously heavy door that led outside to the super conveniently located Starbuck's... yeah toe meet door. I sucked it up when it happened but holy shit I saw stars. Well then I walked on it practically all Tuesday (hung with Jeremy... go see Pride & Glory BTW) and by Wednesday morning I was hating life.

OK LA Stories...

I had a great time meeting everyone. That truly is the best part of the events for me making our "cyber" friendships have "real world" connections. Putting voices to faces. You guys are freaking amazing. The transformations and stories... all I can say is WOW! You all inspire me.

Ohhhh and get this I can end my years of therapy. My pals Jandell and Little Michele hooked me up with an EASY BAKE OVEN!!! It made my weekend!

So on the agenda is an Easy Bake Oven version of my chocolate cake for the kiddos especially since I read this article this weekend. Scary.

The weekend was a blast...

Halloween on Hollywood Blvd, Tattoos, Piercings, The OH Halloween Party, a Bar Fight and that was just the first night. I told you I was gonna party like a rock star. So when we made bail (only joking) we had some work to do...

Saturday was our Round Table Grads Gab. A group of us post-ops sharing our stories. It was super well received. We're talking needed to get more chairs, standing room only good. Thanks so much for making it a success. We hope OH will take note and have more of those in the future. It was a great opportunity for us to realize that everyone's journey/battle is soooo different but we also have a deep connection that no one else can understand but a fellow post-op.

Saturday night was the Casino Night/Dance. Lots of fun. "The Daddy Mac will make you Jump! Jump!" Yeah thighs were sooooo hurting the next day.

Sunday was our presentation on the main stage. The Eggface & Melting Mama Road Show AKA "2 crazy chicks and chocolate cake." We had so much fun sharing recipes and products and hope you did too. Click, BellPlantation and a few other companies hooked us up with loads of swag and lots of people went away happy. Thank you for coming and supporting us.

The rest of the weekend was spent connecting with friends, drinking a few too many tequilas and getting naked ;) Ohhh how I wish. Yeah nothing that good. I just flashed my plastic surgery scars for those who wanted to see Dr. Quiroz's superior workmanship. A lot of woman have seen my boobies and at least two of the Kyoto Grand Hotel male staff. Next time we find a room with a lock LOL.

Thankfully all the walking I did I ended up a pound down on the scale despite my indulgence in some adult beverages and lots of Smoked Gouda cheese (don't ask.)

Can't wait for the next event! Want to see the Eggface & Melting Mama Road Show next year... you can always put in a good word for us events@obesityhelp.com

Sooooo much fun

Here's a little glimpse into this weekend's fun at the National OH Conference in Los Angeles.

I have a few pals who are going to email me some more pics socalshell@aol.com and I'll add to this as I get them.

On my way to LA

I'm off to LA. I have waaaaay too much stuff. Besides my clothes and Halloween costume... I have blenders, ice cream makers, giveaway prizes and supplies. Like three tubs worth. The poor bellhop will surely get a hernia helping me to my room.

I'm bringing my laptop so I will try to post some pics from Friday night's Halloween Party sometime this weekend. If not look to be inundated with stories and crazy pictures next week.

The blog contest is still going on all weekend so be sure to enter if you haven't already. The winner will be announced sometime Monday when I get back. Good Luck!

If you are jonesing for food porn while I'm away be sure to scroll through the Eggface Archives over on the <--- left side of the screen or use the Search Feature under my before and after pics (type in a keywords like chicken, pizza, chocolate, zucchini and see what comes up)

Safe travels to all my pals coming from other states and all my local pals... see ya in a bit.

And the winner is...

Drumroll...

Casseroles and Crack

This was a super yummy side dish. I served it last night for dinner with those Chicken Patties from Trader Joe's I reviewed awhile back. Tasty. I think I'll throw some grilled chicken in next time to make a main dish version.

Shelly's Squash Artichoke Pesto Bake

1 Yellow Onion, sliced
2 Green Onions, diced
4-6 Mushrooms, sliced
3-4 baby Zucchinis and/or Summer Squash, sliced
1/2 Cup Alfredo Sauce (I used jarred)
2 Tablespoons Store bought Artichoke Pesto
1/2 teaspoon Greek Seasoning
1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
a few twists of Black Pepper
1/4 cup Italian Blend Cheese, shredded

Saute onions and mushrooms till golden. Add zucchini, turn to low heat and cover for 5 minutes. Stirring once or twice. Add artichoke pesto, Alfredo sauce, and seasonings. Pour into a Pyrex casserole and top with cheese. Bake for 30 minutes at 350.

I ate 1/2 of what is pictured below...

I've said it before and I'll say it again... I seriously think the creator(s) of the BMI Formula were smoking crack. So Tuesday is my weigh-in day. I had surgery on a Tuesday morning in 2006 so it's the day I picked to weigh each week. I can't do the everyday thing. I don't want to see little water retention glitches. I want to see the real deal. Everyday weighing would make me crazy. Once a week weigh-ins are a pleasant experience most weeks.

Anyway... I lost 2 1/2 pounds this week. (at over 2 years out so screw those "windows of opportunity" for weight loss stories)

But... the BMI chart says I'm still "moderately overweight" because I'm a short shit and even though I'm wearing size 4 jeans and did get into a pair of 2's this weekend BTW but kind of hurt myself in the process LOL... the chart says I need to lose 4.9 more pounds to be "normal."

Being normal is highly overrated.

Seriously though if I got my inner thigh lift I'd probably be down 10+ more pounds. If you've had an inner thigh lift email me would you and let me know the good, bad, and the ugly. I'm still debating. You know... it's hard to go under the knife when it's more cosmetic this time than medically necessary and you know my theory has always been if someone other than me is getting that view they better love me for more than my inner thighs. Comprende?

Highlights of the Day:

* Mmmm Breakfast. I made another version of those little souffles with dried fruits and nuts. It's the same recipe as the original version but with dried cranberries, blueberries, raisins and walnuts in the base.

* Got my tickets booked for Philly... excited. Besides meeting everyone which is so cool. I must take a picture next to the Rocky Balboa statue ;) cause I'm cheesy like that. Speaking of cheesy... locals need to start weighing in on who has the Best Cheese steak. I won't be indulging in the Amoroso rolls but bring on the gooey cheese and meat.

* Environmental Karma points. I bought a cordless electric mower. My stinky old bad for the environment gas powered mower bit the dust finally so I went green.

Apple Pie Protein Ice Cream and other good stuff

I made a batch of Apple Pie Protein Ice Cream this morning. I took a mini ice cream scoop and some soy crisps and made a few ice cream sandwiches for dessert tonight.

Shelly's Apple Pie Protein Ice Cream

1 cup Vanilla Soy Milk (or Regular Milk)
2 scoops Vanilla Protein Powder
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Torani Syrup (I used SF Caramel)
2 oz. No Sugar Added Apple Baby Food (half a regular size jar)
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
dash of Nutmeg
1 Tablespoon Walnuts, chopped
4-6 Sugar Free Oatmeal or Shortbread Cookies, broken up (I use these)

Mix together milk, protein powder, syrup, apple, and seasonings together. I used this gadget to mix it up. It makes it airy and lump free. Pour into ice cream maker. Follow your machine's instructions for freezing. 5 minutes before done add the nuts and cookies (faux crust). You can eat it right away it is soft serve-ish but I like to put it in the freezer to set for an hour or so.

More Eggface Protein Ice Cream recipes and tips.

Highlights of the day:

* I had Starbuck's new Perfect Oatmeal for breakfast. It was yummy! I don't know about perfect but it's darn good. How's that?! 100% whole-grain with your choice of dried fruit or nut medley. I got both. It's unsweetened. You can add Splenda to it yourself or I bet they would give you a pump of one of the SF Syrups in it... Mmmm SF Cinnamon Dolce in oatmeal would rock. I didn't think it needed it. I added a splash of milk from the coffee bar, 1/2 of the packet of dried fruit and 1/2 the packet of nuts. The stats: 140 calories for just the oatmeal; 100 calories for nut medley (whole pouch); 100 calories for dried fruit (whole pouch). Soooo good. TY Starbucks!

* I ran into my old boss today at the Farmer's Market. She hasn't seen me since I was 2 weeks post op from RNY so -152 pounds and a lot of plastics later. She didn't recognize me. I had to say, "It's me Michelle" and her eyes bugged. LOL. I love those moments. BTW here's me in my Size 4's... finally shortened them.

* Mmmm more good eating today. Lunch today is leftover BBQ'd Chicken Kabobs from last night chopped up on a salad of fresh lettuce and cucumber from the Farmer's Market and the last of the tomatoes from my garden with a creamy cilantro dressing. It's hotter than you know what again today but there's a nice breeze so lunch is on the patio.
