Be an advocate - 5 easy ways

Advocate: active supporter of a cause, idea, or policy.

Last year at the Obesity Action Coalition "Your Weight Matters" Convention (and it will be offered again this year) 68+ people flew in a day early to take part in an intensive Advocacy Training Session to learn how to speak directly to elected officials on Capitol Hill on issues related to obesity. It was a great learning opportunity and I highly recommend it but... you don't have to ever step foot in Washington DC to become an advocate.

Here's 5 easy ways to be an advocate in your own backyard:

1. Just becoming a member of the OAC and encouraging others to become members is an easy way ($20/year) The OAC is currently 40,000 members strong representing 93 million people affected by obesity, that is a powerful number to share when advocating for obesity issues. Three people may walk into a legislator's office in Washington but our powerful nationwide coalition stands with them at the ready.

2. Educate the media (and uninformed commenters) - When you see an article about obesity related issues share your story in the comments and if the story is inaccurate contact the author and editor and inform them, tell them you are happy to be a source for future articles.

Prepare to have your blood pressure rise a bit. When I comment on articles, I often get bashed by people who say things like "just close your mouth and get off the couch" or worse name-call. I choose not to engage, "I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed man." ~Oscar Wilde

Instead I just share my story and let that speak for itself.

3. Contact your elected officials and share your story. The majority of legislators know little about obesity, its effects and treatments. You are the expert and can educate them. There is no one better to share the social, emotional, physical and medical impact of obesity than someone who has been personally affected.

How to find contact info for your legislators.
Sign up for OAC Action Alerts - basically it's an email "heads up" that an issue is being discussed and how you can help.

4. When you spot or are the victim of incidents of weight bias or stigma challenge it by educating others. Example: My Costco experience. I know some may think, heck even some in our own community think, "What's the big deal?" "Don't you have a sense of humor?" but consider this fact... weight is a leading cause of bullying and nearly 20% of girls who faced weight bullying attempted (not just thought about, but actually attempted) suicide (per CDC - Center for Disease Control study.) It is a big deal.

The OAC also has a program called "Bias Busters" that directly combats weight bias issues. Past examples: PETA Ads, Facebook pages and sadly countless more.

5. Spread the word.
  • Ask your Doctor's office or support group to join the Obesity Action Coalition or take part in a Walk from Obesity.
  • Share Obesity Action Coalition FREE publications, there's a great Weight Bias in the Workplace Guide every Human Resources office should have a copy of. My favorite to share is the OAC's Understanding Your Weight Loss Options brochure.
  • With your OAC membership you get "Your Weight Matters" magazine when you are done reading it why not pass it on to your doctor's office, library, heck even the hair salon.
  • Share, repost, retweet articles and information on social media and forums you belong to. (FYI: I'm @Eggface and the OAC is @ObesityAction on Twitter)
  • Share your story with others, especially those that had weight loss surgery, dispel the misconceptions and inaccurate information out there by proudly leading by example.
Remember...

Together we will make a difference.

A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts (I try and post them every few days) to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world.  It was Oscar night so dinner was more like a couple of hors d'oeuvres party type foods.

Breakfast: Plain Greek Yogurt sweetened with Sugar Free White Chocolate Torani Syrup topped with a few fresh Raspberries and toasted Almonds.

I put it in a plastic cup, plastic wrapped the top, grabbed a disposable spoon (don't forget this, it sucks when you forget a spoon) took it with me on my walk and found a nice place to sit and eat it at the halfway mark. I make a few of these yogurt parfaits and have them in the fridge for snacks, desserts, or on-the-go breakfasts.

Lunch: Tomato, Cucumber, fresh Mozzarella Salad topped with fresh Basil, sprinkle of toasted Almonds, Oregano, Salt & Pepper and a dollop of Greek Yogurt.

Dinner: I made dinner, well a snacky tidbit type dinner I could make and eat with the Oscar arrivals in the background. It had a loose Oscar theme. The only best picture nominee I saw was "Silver Linings Playbook" so I made a healthified version of Crabby Snacks (if you saw the movie you know the reference, if you didn't here's the back story) and since the movie was set in Philadelphia I made my Philly Cheesesteak Bites.

Shelly's Philly Cheesesteak Bites

1/4 lb. (about 4 slices) Roast Beef (I use Boar's Head Low Sodium), chopped
1 Yellow Onion, diced
1/2 Bell Pepper, diced
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 cup Cheddar or Provolone Cheese, shredded
5 Eggs, beaten
1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt
a few twists of Black Pepper

Saute onions and peppers till golden. Add beef and Worcestershire sauce and saute for 1 minute. Set aside to cool.

When cool mix all ingredients together.

Spoon into lightly greased (Pam works great) mini muffin tins.

Bake for 30 minutes at 350. Makes 24.

Shelly's Silver Linings Playbook Crabby Snacks

4 Mission Carb Balance Whole Wheat Tortillas (Fajita Size)
1 - 6 oz. Can Crab Meat, drained very well
2 Tablespoons Old English Cheese Spread (Kraft, jarred, by crackers in supermarket)
splash of Hot Sauce, to taste (I used Cholula)
dash of Onion Powder
dash of Garlic Powder
a few twists of Black pepper
2 Tablespoons Parmesan Cheese
1 Green Onion, diced

Mix all ingredients (except green onion and Parmesan) together till well combined. Spoon 1 heaping Tablespoon on to each tortilla. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake for 10 minutes at 375. Top with sliced green onion.

The recipe makes enough for 4 Fajita Size tortillas (cut into quarters - 16 pieces) so unless you have a bunch of people you can half the recipe and save the other 1/2 a can of crab for an omelet or frittata which is what I did.

Snacks: Coffee and I made a batch of Protein Ice Cream. Soooo good.

Shelly's Chocolate Almond Fudge Protein Ice Cream

1 cup Vanilla Soy Milk (or Regular Milk)
2 scoops Chocolate Protein Powder
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Torani Syrup (any flavor I used SF Chocolate)
2 Tablespoons Sugar Free Chocolate Fudge Jello Pudding Mix, dry
a Tablespoon or so of Toasted Almonds, optional

Mix together milk, protein, pudding mix and syrup. I used this gadget to mix it up. It makes it airy and lump free or whiz it super fast in a blender. You want it fluffy. Pour into ice cream maker. Follow your machine's instructions for freezing.

You can eat it right away it is soft serve-ish (add optional almonds and mix in) but I like to put it in the freezer to set for an hour or so.

Don't have an ice cream machine? This week's I heart giveaway gives you a chance at one. Here's the link for all the 411 on how to enter.

A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts (I try and post them every few days) to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world. Here's what I ate today...

Breakfast: Shelly's Bananas Foster Yogurt - Sugar Free Caramel Torani sweetened Greek Yogurt (plain), topped with 1/2 a mashed banana and a sprinkle of toasted Almonds.

My eye is looking better today. Yesterday morning I woke up with a black eye and red marks on my neck. Crazy. No clue how it happened. I'm thinking the aliens came back. No seriously, I must beat the crap out of myself in my sleep? Lucky I'm single.

Lunch: Finally had a free morning to take my Mum to the movies and lunch and since my eye looked a bit better we took off for an early matinee. We realized the other day that the Oscars are on Sunday and we haven't seen any of the nominees. We chose Silver Linings Playbook It's up for Best Picture, Best Actor (Bradley Cooper yum), Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress too. We both loved it. We had lunch at Panera Bread. I wanted to try the Hidden Menu (High Protein, Low Carb) I'd heard about.

I ordered the Power Mediterranean Chicken Salad (chicken, baby spinach, romaine, tomatoes, apple-wood smoked bacon, diced eggs, fresh squeezed lemon juice, and extra virgin olive oil) It was tasty. I would have loved a few toasted almonds or cucumbers on top. I was looking for a little crunch, everything was soft, even the bacon bits. I appreciate the menu though for sure. Thanks Panera. Looking forward to trying the other menu items, the breakfast ones are interesting to me. I ate almost all of the good stuff and left most of the spinach. Not that spinach isn't good stuff, it's great but only so much post weight loss surgery pouch real estate, protein gets first dibs.

Dinner: I made one of my favorite casseroles: Shelly's Mediterranean Baked Shrimp

Snacks: Lots of coffee and I took a snack baggie of Applewood Smoked Almonds with me to the movies. I sometimes get a small no-butter popcorn but I had those yummy almonds and trust me if you tasted those you'd want those over popcorn too.

I've got a 1/2 of a Quest Protein Bar in the new Cookie Dough flavor sitting in front of me in all it's ooey gooey chocolatey glory, I heated it up for 8 seconds in the microwave. My pear I had planned to eat was not ripe enough yet. American Idol is on in the background. I'm waiting for the dryer to stop to fold clothes. Hoping the aliens stay away ;) That's my world tonight. Hope all is well in your world.

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts (I try and post them every few days) to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world.

Breakfast: This is one of my go to breakfasts. My Mum (a Brit) is a big scrambled egg fan so I just toss an extra egg in for me and top with sauteed mushrooms, Parmesan cheese, and a few twists of black pepper. Sauteed mushrooms for breakfast = very British.

Lunch: This is a great lunch or dinner when you are home alone. It's easily adaptable add more less shrimp, more less spinach per person. It literally takes minutes to make. Low carb and packed with protein. Any leftover can be used the next day on top of a Tortilla Pizza.

Shelly's Quickie Spinach Shrimp Scampi

1 lb bag of Baby Spinach
12 Raw Shrimp
1 teaspoon (or more to taste) Garlic, minced
a pinch of Red Pepper flakes
a dash of Salt
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil

Saute garlic and red pepper flakes for 1 minute in olive oil. Toss in spinach when it's just wilted add shrimp, stir and cook till shrimp are pink and cooked through.

Dinner: I made one of my favorites. My Butternut Squash Casserole. It's soooo good.

Snacks: Coffee lots of it and I'm on a kick and have had this a few days in a row. Cucumber spears and my High Protein Feta Dip.

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend. We are unseasonably warm. It was 84°F. yesterday. It's not going to last, Tuesday's going to be 50°'s and rainy. Trying to get a few sunny walks in before I'm trapped just beating up my B.O.B. and dancing in my living room in my holey sweats. Off to do that now but check back in an hour or so... Week 3 of the I Heart Giveaway begins and you haven't entered Week 2 you have till midnight.

My Happy Chinese New Year Menu

It was Chinese New Year so to celebrate I made a lazy version of my Chinese New Year Soup, mini Egg Foo Young Bites and a No Sugar Added Custard that tasted like a Chinese Almond Cookie. This was so good, weight loss surgery friendly, low carb and packed with protein. I can't wait for leftovers today!

Shelly's Chinese New Year Soup (Quick Version)

6-8 Mushroom, chopped
3 bunches Baby Bok Choy
1 cup Cooked Crumbled Sausage (I used Turkey Sausage)
4 Green Onions, diced
1 1/2 teaspoons Ginger, grated
3 cloves Garlic, crushed
2 Tablespoons Sherry
3 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
3 cups Chicken Broth
Salt and a few twists of Black Pepper to taste

Saute mushrooms till golden. Add bok choy and saute till limp.

Add remaining ingredients and simmer on low for 30 minutes.

Shelly's Egg Foo Young Bites

2 cups Bean Sprouts
6 Mushrooms, chopped
4 Green Onions, diced
1 Tablespoon Soy Sauce
5 Eggs, beaten
1/2 teaspoon Salt
a few twists of Black Pepper
Olive oil for sauteing

Preheat oven to 350. Saute mushrooms till golden. Add bean sprouts. Cover and cook till bean sprouts go limp about 5 minutes. Set aside to cool. When cool, I snip the bean sprouts up a bit with kitchen shears. Helps them fit in the mini muffin tin better. Mix all ingredients together.

Spoon into lightly greased (Pam non-stick spray works great for this) mini muffin tins.

Bake for 30 minutes at 350. Let them cool a few moments they pull away and pop right out. Makes 24.

These might just be my favorite "Bites" ever.

More Eggface Bites (aka Mini Crustless Quiches)

Today's lunch will be easy. Leftovers heat up great. Soups always taste even better the next day and I just toss the bites in the toaster oven for a few minutes and they are good as new.

Oh and for dessert I made these little Almond Custards that taste like those Chinese Almond Cookies you get when you order take out.

Shelly's Chinese New Year Almond Custard

2 Tablespoons of Bird's Custard Powder
2 cups minus 2 Tablespoons of Milk
2 Tablespoons Sugar Free Almond Torani Syrup

Mix powder into a smooth paste with a little of the milk (regular 2% lowfat milk, soy will not work.) Heat the remaining milk to almost boiling and pour onto the custard mixture. Return the mix to the pan and heat till thickened (it will bubble). Remove from heat and mix Sugar Free Syrup in. Pour mixture into 4/4-oz ramekins or custard cups. Here's what I use. Chill for at least 2 hours in fridge.

Top chilled custards with Homemade No Sugar Added Whipped Cream and a sprinkle of Toasted Almonds.

I realized the other day I never blogged the results of my 2013 New Year raisin toss.

For new readers... every New Year (December 31st) I toss 12 raisins, one at a time, toward my mouth at the stroke of midnight. The idea is for every raisin you get in your mouth you'll have a month of good luck in the coming year. I've done this now for several years. Thankfully my aim has gotten better since the first year. The first year... first raisin tossed, SCORE right in the mouth, second raisin... BAM right in my eye. This raisin thing is pretty accurate because that was a very interesting year.

2013 is going to be a VERY good year according to the raisins. I scored 12 out of 12 raisins in my mouth which has never happened before. I was so excited that I went for an extra raisin toss for added good luck and BAM #13 hit the top of my cheek, just below my eye and bounced onto the floor. So yeah 2013 will be a great year but I shouldn't press my luck ;)

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts (I try and post them every few days) to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world.

Breakfast: I made my Chai Banana Waffles. I love these suckers. They heat up great in the toaster too. So if you make them on the weekend, make an extra batch for breakfasts during the week. The Chai comes from a scoop of Big Train Chai Fit Frappe Protein Drink mixed in.

Olive Oil for sauteing

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the peppers in a lightly oiled Pyrex casserole dish, season with salt and bake for 25 minutes or fork tender. Remove peppers, drain any water that has expelled from the peppers and set aside. You could also nuke them (8 minutes.)

Saute onions and mushrooms till golden. Set aside. Remove sausage meat from casing and cook with turkey till no pink is seen. Add back veggies. Add seasonings and tomatoes. Mix till combined. Add cottage cheese off heat. Mix well. Use an ice cream scoop to spoon mixture into partially cooked pepper halves. Top with feta and Parmesan cheese. Bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes or until golden.

Depending on the size of your peppers you may have a little extra filling. If you do sprinkle cheese on it and bake it along side the peppers. Leftovers are great nuked for breakfast with an egg.
