Bariatric Travel Tips: Disney After Weight Loss Surgery

I'm thinking about planning a trip to the happiest place on earth for my weight loss surgery pals in the Southern California area. It's in the preliminary stages just looking at web sites, costing things out, reading about group rates, etc. but be on the look out for a future announcement local pals. I want to retake this picture...

Me at Disney (pre-op)

I had this web site address saved in my favorites and wanted to share it for those of you headed to Disneyland or Disney World this summer. It's a great resource for general insider park info but I thought this link of all the Disney restaurant menus was particularly helpful for us post weight loss surgery people (AKA guts rearranged) and others looking for healthier meal choices.

I love to read the menus ahead of time that way you don't have to hold a lineup or feel rushed to make a choice. On multiple occasions, I've had some snarly dude breathing heavy behind me as I asked a few extra questions about a menu item. This helps to avoid that. On first glance here are a few of the post weight loss surgery friendly choices I spotted at Disneyland (Anaheim):

Main Street Fruit Cart (Main Street) or Toon Up Treats (Mickey's Toontown): Assorted fruits, fruit cups, hummus, veggie dippers, water

Bengal Barbecue (Adventureland): Chicken and Beef Skewers, have them ax sauces or put on the side, Veggie Skewers, Fruit Cups.

Clarabelle's (Toontown): Chef's Salad dressing on the side, Fruit Salad

Rancho del Zocalo (Frontierland): Citrus Grilled Chicken, Refried Beans, Grilled Veggies, Tropical Fruit.

The full-service, sit-down restaurants in the park and the buffets offer even more options (grilled fish, grilled chicken, veggies, etc.) though they are quite pricey $$$. Breakfast is pretty easy most of the breakfast places in the park have eggs, turkey sausage, fresh fruit, just steer clear of the powdered sugar covered beignets in New Orleans Square or potentially you'll be spending some time in a new park called Dump City.

Also Kid's "Power Packs" are available at multiple locations around the park (string cheese, nonfat yogurt, sliced apples, bottled water or milk, etc.)

You can also bring your own food (opportunity to pack that super cool bento box) here's the park policy on that: "Guests with food allergies or intolerances are allowed to bring food items into any Disney theme park. Please inform the Security Cast Member at bag check that someone in the party has a food allergy or intolerance." A Dr's note goes a long way too.

Some of my current favorite protein snacks to toss in my purse: Almonds, Quest Protein Bar, Oh Yeah or Premier Protein Ready to Drink Shakes, Beef Jerky, Apples with Peanut or Almond Butter, Crunchamame Edamame Snacks, Whisps, a scoop of Protein Powder or travel packet in a snack sized baggie stuck inside my blender bottle shaker.

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

Sorry I've been MIA for a few days. Thank you for the emails I received asking if I was OK. You guys rock. I am A-OK. Some of the away time was work related (time sensitive stuff needed to happen before the holiday weekend, some future blog projects I'm working on too), some fun (a performance of The Wedding Singer at our local theater, a visit from an old friend I grew up with, a trip to the beach, farmer's market) and some not so fun (grating my thumb instead of a block of cheese, yeah ouch... it's healing slowly.)

Be sure to follow my daily tweets @eggface, my Pinterest page, or Facebook page, if I'm not here I'm on one of those for sure.

Let's do a day in my pouch post. This was yesterday...

Breakfast: Left for the Farmer's Market with a cold Butterscotch Crunch Ricotta Pancake wrapped in a paper towel.

They are surprisingly delicious cold with or without a smear of SF Jam, Peanut or Almond Butter. I had it plain. I also had most of a Strawberry and Cream Oh Yeah RTD throughout the morning.

My Farmer's Market haul: Pluots (about 70% plum 30% apricot), Apples, Onions, Zucchini, Cauliflower (jonesing for Cauliflower Pie again), Strawberries, Blueberries, a few bunches of Herbs, Feta Cheese. I've got cooking plans this week. I'll blog them all... you'll be sick of me.

Lunch: Came home and scrambled eggs with a diced tomato and 1 green onion. I spooned some into a Mission Carb Balance, Fajita-size, Whole Wheat Tortilla with a sprinkle of Mexican Blend Cheese.

I heated it in a pan till it was golden and the cheese was melty. Soooo good.

Took off to the Temecula Community Theater performance of The Wedding Singer. OMG totally cute. If you have a performance of this in your area go see it. I wouldn't take the kids (maybe teens) but adults that grew up in the 80's (Eggface = Class of 1989) will love it.

Dinner: I didn't feel like cooking so I just made a Caprese-ish salad of sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, sliced cucumber, a sprinkle of basil, salt & pepper and watched some TV.

Snacks: Much too much coffee as usual. I had a few samples at the Farmer's Market had to taste test a few fruits before purchasing them. I was planning on having some Strawberries with SF Irish Cream flavored homemade Whipped Cream for dessert but I crashed and woke up all crumpled up on the couch at 3 AM with some infomercial blaring. So yeah if you want your butt to look like a 20 year old Brazilian girl's butt I've got the hook-up ;)

✩★✩ Have a safe Memorial Day everyone. Forever thankful to the heroes this weekend remembers. ✩★✩

Shelly's Strawberries with Vanilla Bean Sweetened Ricotta - one of my favorite breakfasts

I love Sugar Free Torani sweetened Greek Yogurt or Ricotta on berries for breakfast or if you are looking for a Sugar Free Whipped Cream option I just got this baby to make my own at home...

With this gadget you can have fresh sugar-free (or regular) whipped cream anytime you want. You fill whipping cream (not heavy whipping just regular whipping) to the fill line. Screw on the top. Insert the CO2 cartridge till it empties, unscrew that. Put the nozzle on, shake a few times and squirt away. It stores in the fridge for up to 10 days just give it another few shakes before squirting.

You can use plain whipping cream or I'm loving making flavored creams with Sugar Free Torani. Here's a bowl of strawberries with a squirt of SF Raspberry Whipped Cream. Nom. I'll be making Chocolate next with some Ghiradelli unsweetened cocoa powder and SF Torani.

I'll be celebrating today since I just picked up some of these babies yesterday from a farm stand near the beach.

Some will be frozen for Protein Shakes like this Shelly's Triple Strawberry Protein Smoothie.

Now, what to make?

Beach Blanket Bento

My bento lunch and beach bag are packed. Time to get my zen on. Everyone needs a zen zone. A place to go to find peace and calmness. The beach is my zen zone.

My Lunch (and a snack)...

Pink Box (top left): Shelly's Beach Bean Salad
Green Box (top right): Sliced Strawberries
Blue Box (bottom left): Vanilla Almond Quest Protein Bar
Orange Box (bottom right): Hunk of 1000 Day Gouda Cheese

My other beach must haves...

Magazines - "A flat belly at any age" mines pretty flat thanks to some post weight loss plastic surgery but it sure doesn't look like hers ;)
Sunscreen & Sunglasses
Computer and Phone (My zen still needs some modern world technology)
Water - trying to do better, those new Lipton Tea & Honey Sticks (Lemon are my fav) are helping and 20 calories seems worth it if it makes me drink more.
My very special coin purse with some cash - I don't like to carry a wallet on the beach.
My favorite mints
My super cool bento box
Packed in my favorite little beach bag
Chairs & blanket in the trunk.

And we're off...

Vegas went bust

My weekend was not quite what I had planned. All week I felt kind of blah like I was fighting something off and it was getting the upper hand. Then Tuesday I got one of those half your head, hurts to move migraines.

Before weight loss surgery I used to get frequent migraines, the curl up in a fetal position in a dark room types. I was treated by a neurologist and was on medications that sort of helped. I was told that when I lost weight I might not suffer from them anymore... wrong. They are not as bad or as frequent and I am not on any medication (other than over the counter stuff I'll pop once and awhile) but I get my share of them. I have been taking note of when and it seems to be either a few days before or after my cycle (we girl's are cursed), hormonal maybe? I deal and usually a cold compress, quiet, sleep and fluids help.

Wednesday though quiet and sleep weren't an option. I had to get my butt in gear and pack and prepare for my road trip and weekend in Vegas. My head was still gnarly and the OTC stuff I was popping was not touching it. As I was packing the last of my stuff for Vegas I was feeling like crap, shaky and nauseous. I had two pals coming to pick me up for the 4 1/2 hour drive to Vegas in the AM and I sat in a heap on the floor and cried. I knew it wasn't going to happen. I made my calls to say I wouldn't be going :(

I was so sad to miss the event but even more sad to miss seeing some pals I only see once or twice a year and all the people I'd never met that were going. I had a darn cute cowgirl night outfit planned too.

I've spent the last 2 days mostly sleeping. I ended up going to the Urgent Care on Thursday afternoon and they said that something I was fighting all week was a sinus infection. I was glad at that point I had decided not to go but you know still bummed at the timing of it all. I couldn't have gotten sick last week or next... noooo. Whatcha gonna do?! It's better to be sick in your own bed then the party pooper sicky in a hotel room everyone checks on.

Moving forward. I felt much better this morning. Not 100% but good enough to go to the farmer's market for an hour or so. I got some beautiful strawberries, sweet onions, zucchini (I'm addicted to that Zucchini Pasta), apples, mushrooms (thinking Chicken Marsala), what else oh yeah a block of feta cheese. This was me this morning.

I think you can see it in my eyes I'm not 100% though I am sporting the cute capris I scored these last week on Macy's clearance rack for $17. Size 4. Woot.

Tomorrow to make up for the depressing weekend I ended up having I am going to sit and stare at the ocean for a few hours. I made this Greek inspired salad, a combination of grilled and fresh vegetables, lentils, chickpeas and feta cheese to take with me on my beach picnic.

Shelly's Beach Bean Salad

1 1/2 cups of Cooked Lentils
1 (15 oz.) can Chick Peas, rinsed and drained
Zucchini, grilled and diced
3 Tomatoes, diced
1/4 cup Feta Cheese, diced
1 Tablespoon Fresh Basil, chopped
1/2 teaspoon Oregano
1 Tablespoon Garlic Olive Oil
Juice of 1/2 a Lemon
Kosher Salt to taste
A few twists of Black Pepper

I used Trader Joe's precooked lentils (found in the refrigerated section) for this salad but if you don't have a TJ's near you just soak, cook and chill some dried lentils the day before you make the salad.

Slice the zucchini lengthwise, brush lightly with olive oil, sprinkle with Greek seasoning (a blend of oregano, black pepper, garlic, find in spice aisle) and grill on the BBQ till golden and bendy. Keeps in fridge for several days for salads, my bites or in frittatas, tortilla pizzas, my pasta-less manicotti, etc.

Dice about 6 slices of the zucchini. Add remaining ingredients and mix till well blended. Cover and refrigerate. These types of salads only get better the next day when the ingredients get a chance to love on one another. It's great to eat right away too. I stole a bite. Sooooo good.

So I'm hoping the soothing lullaby of crashing waves, warm sunshine, fresh air, a scoop of this delicious salad and whatever else I decide to pack in my super cool bento box tomorrow and all will be well again in my world. Hope all is well in your world.

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

My post weight loss surgery yesterday in eating...

Breakfast: Had to get a quick start so I grabbed an Oh Yeah Ready-to-Drink (RTD) Protein Shake this one was Vanilla Creme. I think Vanilla is my favorite, Chocolate comes in a close second but seriously they are all yummy.

Ran a ton of errands and then headed over to get my hair whacked off. I let it go waaaay too long. All those recent $$$ house repairs and car stuff $$$ stopped me from getting it done for a few months. I finally couldn't take it anymore. It was attacking me in the night. I feared for my safety ;) I survived severe GERD, Severe Sleep Apnea, High Blood Pressure but watch I strangle myself with my unruly mop of hair in the night.

I'll be headed to the Vegas Meet & Greet next week and I couldn't look like Cousin Itt (am I dating myself with that reference) in pictures. I'll snap and post a ton. I understand the shindig will be streaming live too. I'll get that info and post it.

Lunch: Came home and had a little tidbit smorgasbord. Cheese, Salami, Cucumber Slices and my High Protein Avocado Dip.

Dinner: For dinner, I did a twist on my zucchini pasta addiction...

Shelly's Zucchini and Onion Pasta

1 Large Sweet Onion, sliced (Vidalia or Maui but regular yellow would be fine)
4 small-medium Zucchini, julienned
1 Tablespoon Fresh Basil, chopped
1 teaspoon Oregano
Salt to taste
a few twists of Black Pepper
Parmesan Cheese and Crumbled Feta (or Goat Cheese would be yum too) on top top

Slice onion into thin slices. Saute till slightly golden. Using this super cool gadget cut the zucchini into julienne strips. Add to onion. Add seasonings.

Continue cooking till zucchini is cooked to desired doneness, about 8 minutes or so. Sprinkle with cheese and serve.

Snacks: Lots of Coffee and I made this creation during American Idol...

Shelly's Banana Split

1/2 banana, sliced lengthwise
a dollop of Cottage Cheese (or Greek yogurt)
2 Tablespoons Sugar Free Strawberry Jam (or any other flavor)
1 Tablespoon Chopped Nuts
Optional: Sugar Free Whipped Cream

Split the banana lengthwise and lay the two halves in a shallow bowl. Spoon a dollop of cottage cheese or Greek yogurt on top of the banana. Warm jam in the microwave for 15 seconds to thin. Drizzle jam and sprinkle nuts over everything. Top with a final squirt of Sugar Free Whipped Cream.

A delicious ending to the day.

Friday Five

A weekly round-up of tidbits, tips, ideas, news articles, random cool things...

1. Loving these: Dorot Frozen Herb Cubes. These super convenient cubes are great to keep on hand in the freezer to drop in soups, stews, sauces or what I've been doing lately is popping 4 out in a small microwavable bowl and nuking them for 35 seconds or so then mixing in 1/2 cup Greek yogurt for a delicious herb dip for veggies, meats (adds moisture & keeps things moving in the right direction) or as a salad dressing.

When the herb garden is out of season these are a great substitute and they taste great because unlike those jars and tubes of garlic & herbs these have no preservatives, fats, acids or food coloring added. Yes, you can make your own (herbs, mini food processor, ice cube tray) but these are just too easy. I bought them at Trader Joe's $1.99 a pack, each pack contains 20 cubes, each cube = 1 teaspoon.

I've only spotted Cilantro, Basil, Garlic so far but the website says they have a few more varieties. Here's a store locator to find them near you.

2. Looking ahead: Mark your calendars to join me at the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) Inaugural "Your Weight Matters" Convention, October 25-28 in Dallas, Texas. The agenda has just been released and is packed full of AWESOME. They have a Facebook event page too.

3. Some articles I read this week that were worth checking out:

Why Being Overweight Could Earn You a Lower Salary
Bariatric surgery patients get a leg up with new fitness program
Research Shows Brain Scans Can Predict Weight Gain
Before winning her crown Mrs. New Jersey won the battle against obesity

You have to check out this Fox NY report on a company claiming to make low carb, low fat pizzas.

Moral of the story: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

4. It's Starbuck's Frappucino Happy Hour this week. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of the frappucinos even the light versions are not the best choice and whatever you do don't even think about the new Starbucks Mocha Cookie Frappucino Grande 16-oz has 480 calories, 19 g fat, 76 g carbs, 69 g sugar. Eeek!?!

A few weight loss surgery friendly Starbucks options...

Sugar Free (aka Skinny) Cinnamon Dolce Latte, no whip
Sugar Free Vanilla Latte, no whip
Sugar Free Caramel Latte, no whip
Sugar Free Hazelnut Latte, no whip
Sugar Free Mocha
Tazo Passion Tea with Sugar Free Vanilla (instead of Classic Syrup)
Tazo Vanilla Rooibos Tea Latte with Sugar Free Vanilla (instead of Classic Syrup)

All of the above can be made either hot or cold, milk can be changed (I'm a soy girl) be sure to say Sugar Free loud and clear and confirm with the Barista when you retrieve your order "this is Sugar Free, right?" Trust me on this they have messed up my order and I've spent the next hour feeling like crud.

or better yet make a CLICKacchino at home!

Shelly's Malted CLICKball

5. Speaking of CLICK it's the last day to enter the new DECAF CLICK Giveaway. Click here to enter. 3 winners will be announced tomorrow. Also check back Sunday when an exciting NEW GIVEAWAY BEGINS.

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

My post weight loss surgery yesterday in eating...

Breakfast: I took the car in for an oil change where I found it needs a bunch of hoses and belts (those will have to wait, there is a comma in the total) and the tires were dangerously in need of replacing so I was out of the house most of the day dealing with that. I drank an Oh Yeah Ready-to-Drink (RTD) Protein Shake on the fly. I really enjoy these. The small ones like this (8 oz.) are 18 grams of protein, only 2 sugars, 3 carbs, 130 cals. The large ones (14 oz.) are 32 grams of protein, 3 sugars, 4 carbs, 220 cals. Quick, portable source of protein. All of the flavors I have had are pretty tasty. I picked up a few for my road trip to the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America Meet & Greet this month. Can't wait to meet everyone!

Lunch: I had about an hour at home and the Yogurt Cheese I made the night before was ready so I ate some with cucumber slices "my crackers" and this cool spice I found the other day that tastes like an everything bagel.

The yogurt cheese (aka Labneh) is basically just Greek yogurt drained overnight in the fridge. I sprinkle it with a little salt to help the draining process.

You need:
1/2 cup Greek Yogurt
dash of Salt (optional)
a coffee filter
a metal sieve
a bowl

Line a metal sieve with a coffee filter (if they are thin double them up) place the sieve over a bowl tall enough that the sieve doesn't touch the bottom. Put 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt in the coffee filter, sprinkle with salt. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge overnight.

The next day you'll have a cream cheese like texture "cheese" made from yogurt. Waaaaay lower in fat and cals than the real deal cream cheese. Stores in the fridge for several days. I sprinkled mine with Bagel Spice (basically it's poppy seeds, minced onion and garlic, white and black sesame seeds, caraway seeds and salt) for a "low carb bagel" fix, a little pesto sauce drizzled over it is yum too.

My tires were a special order... of course. After a few calls, I found a place in town that could get a hold of them quickly and I was off to the tire shop. I sat in the waiting area reading Golf Digest and Guns and Ammo magazine. I told them they needed a token Better Homes and Garden or People magazine for the chicks that come in. I left knowing more than I ever wanted to know about golf shoes and $300 poorer. Fun times.

Dinner: I had some leftover cooked bacon from the other day that needed using so I made a BST Bacon, Spinach, Tomato Frittata. I love breakfast for dinner especially when the messy part like bacon making is already done.

Shelly's BST Frittata

4-6 slices of cooked Bacon
Handful, 3/4 of a cup-ish fresh Spinach leaves
2 Tomatoes, chopped
3 Eggs, beaten
a few twists of Black Pepper
Salt to taste

Saute bacon, tomatoes and spinach till spinach is just wilted in an oven safe non stick pan. Add egg and seasoning. Sprinkle Parmesan over and when eggs are almost set place under the broiler to brown and puff about 5 minutes.

Snacks: Too much Coffee (including some rather scary coffee, at least I think it was coffee, at the tire shop) and when I finally got to plop on the couch and chill I had a Gala Apple sliced with Almond Yogurt Dip. Some days I swear I live on Greek Yogurt. I should move to Greece, find me a Greek shipping magnate.

Shelly's Almond Yogurt Dip

1 Tablespoon Almond Butter
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Torani Syrup (SF Almond, Vanilla, Caramel, whatever)
1/2 cup Greek Yogurt
1 Tablespoon Sliced Toasted Almonds

Nuke the almond butter for 10 seconds to thin it out. Stir it into the yogurt and SF Torani. Top with a sprinkle of almonds.

An expensive but yummy day.
