Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world.

Breakfast: Fresh Farmer's Market Berries and a dollop of Ricotta cheese. I sweetened the ricotta with a little Sugar Free Torani Syrup (or a drizzle of honey or agave is nice too if you can do those.) I love Ricotta. Nice amount of protein and you can go sweet or savory with it. It was a big lifesaver for me in those early months post weight loss surgery.

I've had a gnarly headache for a few days. It's all allergy related I think. As I sat on the patio I could see particles flying through the air. I did breakdown and take a Benadryl yesterday it helped a bit but those things are like roofies to me and I was useless the rest of the day so I am trying to just suffer through it.

Some of my Favorite Protein Sources

Lunch: Italy meets Mexico. I made a Pizza Quesadilla: Mission Carb Balance Whole Wheat Fajita Size Tortilla, sliced tomato, pepperoni, mozzarella, sauteed till golden and gooey. I think I might do tomato sauce instead of fresh tomato next time I make this. It was delicious but messy to eat, tomato slices wanted to slip out.

Dinner: Our Cinco de Mayo Feast. The headache still hasn't gone completely so I was glad I had picked up that Chicken Asada from Trader Joe's I blogged about awhile back. It's fully cooked so just needs to be nuked for 3 minutes. While it was heating I sauteed a 1/2 of a yellow onion, added a can of cannelini beans I rinsed and drained, chopped up the Chicken Asada and tossed it all together. It says it serves 2 on the box but chopped up like I do it a family of 4 could make a ton of tacos with it and all be well fed. For $5.99 it's a protein packed cheap meal deal. If you have a TJ's in your neighborhood drop it in your cart next time.

Last night I had BBQ'd some fresh corn till it was slightly golden. When it was cool enough to handle I removed the kernels from the cob and put it in a container in the fridge. For our Cinco de Mayo feast, the corn got reheated for a minute sprinkled with Cotija cheese (Elote style) and a squeeze of lime. I also made a little fresh guacamole to go with. I think the whole meal took 20 minutes since most of it was a reheat job. I ate a dollop of each. It was delicioso!

Snacks: Lots of coffee (yes, that is my cup), for those that asked I was cleared for coffee at 1 month and haven't had any issues (not all programs allow coffee *sadists LOL* so be sure to always follow your plan)

and I made another one of those Fauxchata Horchata Protein Shakes I posted the other day. This time I made it a little more fancy and added No Sugar Added Homemade Whipped Cream.

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world.

Breakfast: We're having a mini-heatwave here in Southern California. Yesterday's high was 97 degrees so my meals were either cold or cooked outside with little cleanup. Today is supposed to be a little cooler and by Wednesday we will be down to the 70's again, so don't be surprised if I start making soup suddenly.

I had an appointment to get my oil changed at 7:15 AM (my 1997 vehicle needs to last forever, remember I was a self pay for weight loss surgery & 2 rounds of post-op plastics) so I mixed up a protein shake put it in a to-go cup and tossed some Cinnamon Almond Cookie Bites in my bag. Super tasty combo reminded me of Mexican Horchata and Churros. So good, I didn't even give a second look to the free danishes they give you while you wait for your car.

Shelly's Cinnamon Protein Shake (Fauxchata Horchata)

1 cup Silk Almond Coconut Blend Milk (any milk will do)
1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar Cinnamon Sugar Free Torani Syrup
dash Cinnamon
a few Ice Cubes

Blend and hit the top with another dash of Cinnamon. If you don't have Brown Sugar Cinnamon, use SF Vanilla or SF Caramel and shake some more cinnamon in.

Lunch: I bought a rotisserie chicken from Costco last night, we ate that with steamed green beans and sauteed mushrooms. I saved a breast section to make chicken salad, some leftover beans, a few additions and voila (wait that's French...what's the word for voila in Spanish?) Mexican Chicken and Black Bean Salad.

Shelly's Mexican Chicken and Black Bean Salad

1 cup-ish Cooked, Chopped Chicken (leftover rotisserie or grilled)
1 cup Black Beans
1/4 cup Shredded Mexican Cheese
1 Green Onion, diced
3 oz. Greek Yogurt, plain
1 Tablespoon Taco Seasoning Mix
1/2 teaspoon Ground Cumin
salt to taste
a few twists of Black Pepper

Mix all ingredients together. Serve in lettuce cups like a taco or I ate it as is.

Don't you love the knitted cactus my Mum made me... finally a house plant I can't kill.

Dinner: Old faithful we call it at my house: Fish Foil Packet, always a little different based on what I have on hand. Keeping with my Mexican themed day these were Salsa Fish Foil Packets, each packet had: 1 Tilapia filet (any fish will work), 1 small Zucchini, sliced , 1 green onion, chopped, a dollop of salsa (heat level of your choice), drizzle of olive oil, generous sprinkle of seasoning blend whatever you like (Greek, Italian, Lemon Pepper, whatever you love. I used some Taco Seasoning.) Wrap tightly in foil. Toss packets on the BBQ grill, covered for 15-20 minutes (depending on the thickness of the fish) don't lift the lid, trust me it'll be perfect every time and next to zero cleanup... toss the foil and wash a fork. I like that.

Other Eggface Foil Packet Dinners

Snacks: Too much coffee and a sliced apple with Chocolate and Peanut Butter Yogurt Dip while I watched DVR'd Grey's Anatomy.

Shelly's Chocolate and Peanut Butter Yogurt Dip

1/2 cup Greek Yogurt, plain
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Torani Syrup (most any flavor would be yummy)
1 Tablespoon Unsweetened Cocoa
1 Tablespoon Powdered Peanut Butter (I used Chike PB)

Mix till well blended. Dip apples, strawberries, bananas, hunks of 5 minute protein cake, your finger.

It was a very tasty day.

Starbucks Un- Happy Hour

Just got the latest promotion from Starbuck's in my inbox this morning: Get half off any Frappuccino® Blended Beverage Happy Hour May 1st-10th, 3-5 PM. Word of warning: You might want to just say FrappuciNO. A Grande Caramel Ribbon Crunch has 450 calories, 75 grams of sugar (no that's not a typo 75 grams!) and 77 grams of carbs and that was switching it to non-fat milk (from the default whole milk.) Take the whipped cream off and you save a few cals (320 cals, 68 g. sugar, 69 g. carbs) but WHOA!? FYI: 4 grams equals 1 teaspoon of sugar. It's pretty early here in California for math but that's almost 19 teaspoons of sugar.

Alternative... Try a Grande Sugar Free Iced Latte instead (80-100 cals depending on milk, 10 grams sugar, 12 grams carbs)

It's not as fluffy and pretty and not 1/2 off but is it really savings if you need to use that money for a Dr's co-pay in the future. Or stay home make yourself a Coffee Protein Shake. Several to choose from: Chike makes a great High Protein Iced Coffee, Big Train's Fit Frappé is another, and Click. All tasty, give them a try, see which is your favorite and check their stats to see which work in your plan.
