Friday Five

A weekly round-up of tidbits, tips, ideas, news articles, random cool things...

1. Heads up on a great deal & free shipping: Amazon has Cuisinart Ice-21 Ice Cream Makers on sale. If you have been wanting to start making protein ice cream Cuisinart brand machines are my favorites. Easy to use, no ice/salt just freeze the cylinder and in 20 minutes or so you'll have soft serve.

I am so tempted to get one of these new fun colored machines.

and as always the small percentage from purchases made thru the Amazon links on the left help The World According to Eggface keep doing it's thing so thank you.

2. Are you completely hooked on Pinterest like I am? Oh my goodness can that site completely suck time. I always say I'll just look for 5 minutes and sure enough 5 minutes becomes 50. So I give you this tip with a disclaimer: I am not responsible for the time sucking vortex you may find yourself in, it's seriously the Internet's version of the Bermuda Triangle. So many pretty pictures and ideas you will get lost.

Here's the tip: Did you know some of our favorite weight loss surgery friendly companies have Pinterest pages? Be sure to follow our friends at Lauren's Hope (I especially love their Inspiration Station Board), Big Train, Obesity Action Coalition, Slimpressions and lots more. Oh and yours truly of course, The World According to Eggface has a page too. Be my pal.

3. Some articles I read this week that were worth checking out:

From brain to mouth: The psychology of obesity
Most Americans ignore truth about obesity, researchers say
Chile Bans Toys in Fast Food to Attack Child Obesity
In central California, obese children developing ailments of their grandparents
Morbid Obesity as a Covered Disability under the ADA
Alcohol abuse after weight loss surgery

and something funny spotted on TV. A cameo on MTV's show Snooki & JWOWW by bariatric vitamin supplement company Celebrate Vitamins. I don't think either are weight loss surgery post-ops. I believe it's a bottle of their Iron +C (great vits BTW) so I'm assuming a pregnant Snooki's or both I think have had plastic surgery so maybe anemia after surgery.

4. Nom Alert: Laughing Cow Strawberries & Cream Cheese wedges. Smeared on apples slices, on celery or cucumber. This Saturday I'll pick up some strawberries from the Farmer's Market and try a twist on my Strawberry Cannoli with it (maybe 1/2 ricotta, 1/2 strawberry cream cheese) and I'm thinking it would be great in a strawberry version of my Pumpkin Cream Cheese Protein Muffins.

There's 45 calories in a 1 wedge serving, 1 g. sugar, 2 g. carbs, 2 g. protein. I understand there's a cinnamon version too (that would be yummy on Apples I'm sure) but I've yet to find it in my local stores.

5. The summer of Eggciting giveaways continues Sunday. So be sure to stop by the blog Sunday when another AWESOME Eggface Giveaway begins! What will it be?!

Lotsa Love for Leftovers 7

Post weight loss surgery when you eat out in a restaurant it's a given there will be a lot of leftovers or waste. I hate wasting food. Sometimes I have no choice if I'm headed to a movie or I'm too far from home but if I'm heading home right after a meal you better be sure the leftovers are coming home. Those leftovers can be "repurposed" and transformed into a bunch of great meals.

Repurposing: Transforming leftovers into something equally as yummy. The goal is for them to taste & look so completely different you don't realize you are having leftovers.

Spotted a $10 off Red Lobster coupon online so instead of standing in front of a hot stove or heating up the already hot house by turning on the oven, off we went to dinner. My order was the Build Your Own Meal. I chose Shrimp Scampi and Crab Legs and I asked for Sliced Tomatoes as my side dish. They are not on the menu but if you ask they will do this. The meal comes with a Garden Salad (I ask for no croutons and dressing on the side.) I know my capacity pretty well now so I remove and box 1/2 my dinner right away. I ask for a box when I order, they look at you weird but I just say, "I'm not terribly hungry and I know I will need a box so can you just bring it with the food."

I ate my salad, most of the crab legs and a couple of shrimp.

This is what came home...

These leftover shrimp, a little crab, and sliced tomatoes became this AWESOME repurposed bento box lunch the next day.

Pink Box (top left): Shelly's Leftover Shrimp and Crab Salad
Green Box (top right): Sliced Strawberries
Blue Box (bottom left): Cheese stick
Orange Box (bottom right): Pistachios

Shelly's Leftover Shrimp and Crab Salad

1 cup or so Cooked Shrimp Scampi and/or Crab Leftovers
1 Tomato, chopped
1/2 Cucumber, chopped
2 Tablespoons Greek Yogurt
1/2 teaspoon Oregano
1/2 teaspoon Salt
a few twists of Black Pepper

Mix together all ingredients. Serve as is, on top of a green salad, or as a lettuce wrap. Made plenty for 2 delicious bento box lunches.

More Strategies for Eating Out After Weight Loss Surgery

Ricki Lake Show Taping Day

I am sworn to secrecy (literally lots of legal papers were signed) about the show itself. I can't share that stuff till next month after it airs but I can give you a little glimpse into the day. I was picked up by a car service at 7:15 AM and arrived at Culver City Studios the home of The Ricki Lake Show around 10 AM.

Outside the studio

I was brought up to my dressing room.

I was told I would soon be heading to hair & makeup and to wait, watch TV, relax (yeah right). I was happy they had free wifi (Thanks Ricki) so I was able to get some stuff done and tweet and Facebook a little.

Here's a look at the inside of the dressing room...

This was the basket of goodies that I avoided all day. I did snake that bag of Apricot Shortbread cookies for Mum before I left. Shhh.

The lovely ladies in Hair & Makeup dolled me up.

I was told to go back in my dressing room to wait for wardrobe. On the way back I passed Ricki in the hall. I didn't realize it was her until she had zoomed passed me and into her dressing room which has the cutest Ricki Lake Show logo doormat in front of it. I didn't have my phone or I would have snapped a picture.

Wardrobe came in and approved my outfit and took it to be steamed. I was told to bring 3-5 outfits, no stripes, no patterns, preferably jewel tones, wear heels, no bling. I was glad they chose the outfit they did. It was the one I liked the best. I will save that picture for after the show airs.

The rest of the afternoon consisted of visits from producers who I had only chatted with by email and phone. It was nice to finally put faces to the names that have been in my inbox and on my message machine so much these past few weeks.

At one point a staff member came in a took my lunch order. My Chicken Caesar Salad was delivered and I painstakingly removed all the croutons one by one. See my 15 minutes of fame has not gone to my head. Had it gone to my head I would have requested an official crouton remover to do that laborious task for me ;) Next time.

I ate all the chicken. 4 forkfuls of lettuce.

After lunch, I was told to get dressed and await the sound person. Who came and felt me up err I mean placed a mic in my shirt. Not too long after we were brought down to a holding area backstage. Make-up people came and refreshed the lipstick I had eaten off at lunch. I sat on one of those tall director's chairs till showtime.

BEGIN CONE OF SILENCE.

The show will air sometime in September on FOX. It's been picked up by 98% or something like that markets so you should be able to see it in your area (or online.) I'll let everyone know when I have an exact air date.

So yeah, well... I can chalk appearing on a talk show off the bucket list. Glad it was The Ricki Lake Show and not a Maury Povich "Who's the Baby Daddy?" episode. YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER.
