What's Shamrock Shakin'?

March 1st. Wow! Where did February go? Weren't we just celebrating Christmas? I'm not sure this year flying by is such a good thing since I am closing in on my 40th birthday this summer. OK *shudder* 40 not ready to think about that yet. Anyway...

As a kid I remember squealing with excitement seeing the sign in the window of McDonald's announcing that the Shamrock Shake, a nuclear green, mint-flavored milkshake, sold each year to celebrate St. Patrick's Day had returned. Here's my healthier version, a perfect way to start March.

Shelly's Shamrock Protein Shake

8 oz. Vanilla Soy Milk
1 scoop of Vanilla Protein Powder
1 1/2 Tablespoons Sugar Free Peppermint Torani Syrup
a few drops of Green Food Coloring
3-4 Ice Cubes
Optional: SF Land o Lakes Whipped Cream

Blend on high. I served it with a squirt of SF Land o Lakes Whipped Cream.

Other Eggface Favorite Protein Shakes and Smoothies

So is your March coming in like a lion or a lamb? It's a beautiful lamb-y day here. I have a busy morning hence the quick shake breakfast but I'm hoping to get outside in this sunshine for lunch and a walk this afternoon. We've been getting our fair share of rain lately so my daily walks (my major form of post weight loss surgery exercise) have not been as long. I've missed them. They are my time to clear my head. Those days when I can't get out I've been just turning on the music and dancing or lately its been me attempting to Zumba. I can not follow steps at all. On the DVD everyone is going left, I'm going right, their arms are up, mine are down, I'm a big ole' mess but I sweat so I guess that is all that matters in the end, right?

Hope everyone has a great first day of March!

Shelley, can you substitute a little peppermint extract for the syrup? I'm thinking it may be too bitter of a taste. Too bad the syrups aren't widely available for purchase, except on the Internet. I don't use enough of any flavor of them to order...I've had the same big bottle of caramel syrup for over a year (in my fridge)!

Hope you love it Nancy!

Julie, Word of warning: careful with the extract versus syrup a little drop'll do ya with that stuff ;) and if you like it sweet you might want to do SF Vanilla Torani or a packet of Splenda since extract has no sweetener in it.

SF Torani... I blow through bottles of that stuff. Gotta look through my recipes for some uses. Hit the search table and type in Caramel or SF Caramel for oodles of ideas ;)

in my personal experience, if I just follow the steps WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT, I have no trouble keeping up. But if I think about what I'm doing, all hope is lost.

And, for me, March has started as sucky as Feb ended. I'm taking a mental health day tomorrow.

I have to agree with Nana on this one! Forty is the new 30, so don't be afraid! Bodly go where so many of us have already gone before!! I just turned 50 this last summer and sassier than ever! My Mom (God rest her soul) used to love those Shamrock shakes. I think of her when I see the signs or the commercials (well, I think of her all the time). Hope they have them in heaven!

Thankfully, the Shamrock Shake was NOT one of my pre-wls vices. Yuck! LOL

I am proud of myself, however, for making my very first attempt at a Greek yogurt dip. My mom had bought some from the store (Ostia, I think) and loved it, and I said - I bet I can make that! It turned out a bit less solid than the commercial version (due to fresh cucumber, which I didn't think to squeeze the water out of ahead of time), so it's a bit more like tztziki sauce rather than dip, but it sure tastes good! :D Yea for the mini food whizzer!

Shelley, I have been following you for about a year. Thought I would finally tell you how much help you have been. I just returned from my support group where I was singing praises for your protein ice creams. I am trying to hook the pre-op people on your blog. I am eleven months post op and have become one of the old timers in the group. (Literally and figuratively- I'm 65.) Your impending birthday sounds young to me. It only gets better. Retirement is so close I can taste it. Thank you again for all you do. She-coot

MMMMMM. Shamrock shakes!! Will have to try it! Our March in like a lion, hopefully out like a lamb. High winds, rain, cold temps, yep it's a Lion March.

I've made the Shamrock shake twice now. I can't seem to find sugar free whipped cream in a can so I use sugar free Cool Whip. Yummy stuff! Thanks for sharing all your recipes for goodies!

Thank you guys for the pep talk about the BIG 40. I'm trying to get used to the thought of it ;) it's going to take a bit.

Marlena, Glad you are enjoying it! The SF Whipped Cream is made by Land O Lakes. I'd hit there facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/LandOLakes or website and email them for locations that carry near you. I'm in SoCal and my Albertson's carries it. You can also ask your dairy dept manager to stock it. If they carry other LoL's products generally they will do it on request.

Around here, our Shamrock shakes aren't minty enough...kind of a cross between mint and lime. For that reason, have never been an issue for me. I'm looking forward to trying this recipe out. Thanks for sharing!

I wish I had seen this yesterday! I had the "real deal" last night and damn THAT much sugar. No wonder my reading was so high this morning! I am a diabetic who is considering the surgery. Love your blog.

I'm so glad I saw this on your facebook! Just the other day I was out too late running errands and ended up taking advantage of the McDonald's inside of Walmart to pacify the kids. As I stood their sipping my water while they ate I was having an internal battle over those Shamrock shakes. The giant posters were plastered everywhere! So glad the calories were also posted so I could conclude that it just wasn't worth it. I made your version after my workout today with the Great Value brand vanilla soymilk, Syntrax vanilla bean torte protein powder, and since I didn't have peppermint s.f. syrup I used the vanilla and added 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract. Yum! So, so good. Thank you!
