Obesity and Health: Some Wishes for 2015

As we start to look toward the new year, here are some of my wishes for 2015 in how we address obesity and health. I realize some of these might take many years of wishes but I am determined to chip away.

We need to stop blaming and shaming those affected by obesity. Anyone who is fighting this battle on a personal basis (my story) knows that obesity is a multifaceted issue and much more complicated than saying no to the bread roll and jogging. If it was that easy, I doubt we would have millions of people affected.

How about addressing obesity by creating a supportive environment...

Help put an end to fat shaming and weight based bullying. Call it out when you see it. Don't laugh at "fat jokes" obesity is not a joke or entertainment.

Doctor's offices need to be a weight bias free safe zone. Medical professionals need to treat all people with kindness and compassion. Period.

Fight for access to obesity treatments and insurance plans (& Medicare) that cover those treatments (nutrition classes, fitness classes, pharmaceuticals, surgical intervention, counseling) and not just the $$$$ illnesses caused by obesity (diabetes, cancer, heart, etc.)

Support creating jobs with living wages that don't have people struggling to make ends meet (Little Debbie $1 a box, pasta $1 a box versus fish, chicken, apples several $'s a pound) and work so many hours then spend another couple on public transportation making that dollar menu the option.

Encourage teaching children nutrition and healthy cooking in school and put physical education back in their day. Stop marketing junk food to kids. Why must there be candy, soda and chips for sale in every store in America?! Best Buy (why do I need a Snickers and a Coke with my Big Screen TV) and Toys R Us (to get to the checkout why must we must pass through enough cartoon character shaped sugar to fill a football stadium.) How about creating a few supermarket checkout lines that are free of candy.

Make neighborhoods safe and streets with sidewalks and streetlights so an evening walk is possible.

Advocate for healthy vending machines and nutritious and affordable meals in work cafeterias, walking meetings, lunch time walking programs.

Model healthy eating choices in all public buildings and hospitals. How many hospitals in America will treat you for an obesity related heart condition down one hall and sell you soda, candy bars and chips in the vending machine waiting room.

Scripps Health, Chula Vista, CA

These are not excuses. This is reality, but it doesn't have to be. Of course, personal behaviors factor into obesity and healthy choices in body (food, movement) and mind (emotional health) are very important but some of the initiatives above would sure help in the fight.

So there's a few I'll be fighting for in 2015. The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story!

I encourage you to JOIN the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) The OAC is a 50,000 member-strong 501(c)(3) National non-profit organization. The mission of the OAC is to elevate and empower those affected by obesity through education, advocacy and support. The OAC is near and dear to my heart. I am a proud member and I am currently serving on the OAC National Board of Directors. Become a member ($20/year)  I encourage everyone who is, has been, or loves someone who is affected by obesity to joinYou get a great magazine mailed to your house too. FYI: You do NOT have to be a member to attend any OAC events (please make plans to attend the National Convention in August) or utilize their FREE resources but it's a great way to pay it forward.

I believe in everyday advocacy. I know my voice matters and that I can help change the world: Everyday Advocacy - 5 Easy Ways

How the Grinch Stole Christmas Feast

I have a few movies from my childhood I have to watch (at least a bit of) around the holidays... it's just not Christmas without some Home Alone (that scene when Kevin is shopping for himself with coupons), Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas (if you haven't seen it, it's a must see), Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol (classic, I sing along still), and of course the How the Grinch Stole Christmas. No matter how many times I've seen it when the sleigh full of Who-ville holiday swag is teetering on the top of the mountain with Max the dog tied on, I get nervous. I love the lesson too...
“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” ― Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
Two recipes today were inspired by the Grinch. You know how the Grinch sneaks down to Who-ville and steals all the presents, decorations and the Who's feast. "He took the who pudding. He took the roast beast. He cleaned out the icebox as quick as a flash. Why, that Grinch even took the last can of Who hash." So I made some...

Holiday Party Food Ideas Dr. Seuss

Shelly's Who-ville Roast Beast Hash

1 1/2 cups Roasted Butternut Squash
1 Yellow Onion, diced
1 Green Pepper, diced
1 to 1 1/2 cups Leftover, Cooked Roast Beef, cubed (Tri Tip, Brisket, Pot Roast will work)
1/4 teaspoon Thyme
a few twists of Black Pepper
Salt to taste

Roast the squash: Preheat oven to 425. Peel and cube (or cheat like me and buy it already peeled and cubed) the squash. Drizzle with a little olive oil, sprinkle with Kosher salt, toss to coat. Arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 45 minutes turning 2 or 3 times during cooking.

Saute onion and pepper till golden. Cube leftover roast beef. Add all remaining ingredients and cook till warmed through.

If you have a little more or less of one item leftover it doesn't matter, toss it in, hash is flexible. You can even change the "roast beast" to chicken, ham, sausage.

Shelly's How the Grinch Stole Christmas Protein Shake

8 oz. Milk (any cow, soy, almond, coconut)
1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Pistachio Pudding Mix, dry
a few Ice Cubes
optional: a few drops Green Food Coloring

Whiz in blender on high. I topped mine with No Sugar Added Homemade Whipped Cream and a few nonpareils.

Shelly's Homemade No Sugar Added Whipped Cream

1 cup Whipping Cream
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Torani Syrup (any flavor will do)

Whisk till well combined.
Every batch I make a new flavor: SF Vanilla, SF Coconut, SF Almond, if you want pink cream SF Raspberry is great. Fill whipping cream to the fill line of the whipper. Screw on the top. Insert the CO2 cartridge till it empties, unscrew that. Put the nozzle on, shake a few times and squirt away. It makes a ton, store it in the fridge for up to 10 days just give it another few shakes before squirting. Great on berries, shakes and smoothies, crepes

Christmas Tree Trimming Treats

Finally finished the Christmas decorating. It took a rain storm to trap me and get me in the spirit. The minute the sky got gray and there was a little chill in the air I jumped on it, made a few weight loss surgery friendly holiday treats and decked the halls! Here's a few pics from our trimming the tree fun.

Our little refreshment station.

No Sugar Added (NSA) Cocoa, Fit Frappe, or Coffee with NSA Homemade Flavored Whipped Cream and a variety of toppings and mix-ins: Crushed Sugar Free Peppermints, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Powdered Peanut Butter (Mmmm mixed in NSA Cocoa is soooo good), Sugar Free Torani Syrups the knitted toppers created by my Mum...

We had a few holiday goodies. I bought a box of Spelt Sugar Free Cookies and jazzed them up a bit. They are sort of like Pecan Sandies if you remember those... sort of plain on their own but I dip half in melted SF Chocolate, sprinkled a few of them with nonpareils to make them pretty and place them on wax paper in the fridge till they set firm. Yum.

and I made a batch of my Chocolate Protein Mini Donuts and arranged a few on my footed cake stand.

Shelly's Mini Chocolate Protein Donuts

1 cup Almond Flour (aka Almond Meal)
1/2 cup Chocolate Whey Isolate Protein Powder
1/2 cup Multigrain Pancake Mix
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
2 Tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa
1 Egg, beaten
3 Tablespoons Sugar Free Torani Syrup (I used SF Vanilla)
1 Tablespoon Canola Oil
1/4 cup Water
Super Groovy Mini Donut Pan

Preheat oven to 325. Mix all ingredients till well combined. Spray Mini Donut Pan with Pam. Fill 1/2 full with batter (batter is the consistency of brownie batter). Bake 8 minutes. Remove from pan and cool on wire rack. Makes 24.

Cook's Note: Almond Flour is ground blanched almonds. Almond Meal is ground almonds with skins on. Basically the same thing and pretty much interchangeable in most of my recipes. Find it at Trader Joe's, health food stores, online or make your own (mini food processor + almonds + power on = almond meal.)

I dipped a few in the same melted SF Chocolate (nuke some SF bars or chips) and topped a couple with crushed SF Peppermint, chopped Pecans, Nonpareils and Multigrain Cheerios... sing it with me.... 5 Gold Rings!

The results of our labor. O Christmas Tree, 2014...

and it isn't Christmas without our Snow Lady (18 years) we gave her a much needed face-lift last year and a new purse. She reminds me of the "Feed the Birds" lady in Mary Poppins.

Happy Holidays Everyone! It's the last day to drop your name in the hat for the latest Eggface Giveaway so be sure to do that before midnight pacific time 12/14/2014 if you haven't already.

10 Tips for Surviving the Holidays Post Weight Loss Surgery

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world. Here's what I ate yesterday...

Breakfast: I had an abundance of apples so I cooked a few. I just peeled, chopped them and cooked them with a couple of pumps of Sugar Free Torani Syrup (I used a little SF Salted Caramel), a dash or 2 of cinnamon and a dash of apple pie spice. I stirred them occasionally and cooked them till they were softened but still held shape.

I topped a scoop of cooked apples with a dollop of sweetened ricotta cheese (just added some cinnamon and SF Vanilla Torani to taste.) You could use honey or agave too whatever sweetener you use. On top of that I sprinkled some Chai Spiced Protein Granola. OMG Have you made this granola yet?!... make it. It should be called cracknola, it's addictive. Soooo good! I use Big Train Spiced Chai Protein (you could use any protein but try the Chai version, cracknola!)

More Weight Loss Surgery Friendly Breakfasts

Lunch: Shrimp Cocktail and Cheese. Pretty Simple. I use regular cocktail sauce. They sell SF ones but I don't use that much. See the amount pictured, probably half that gets actually consumed. I ate on the fly, in between a project for work (I work from home) I was also dragging out the holiday decorations and you know how that goes... surrounded by a sea of boxes.

I took a break outside a little later with a protein shake. It has been gorgeous here high 70's. Though it's lovely it's not conducive to the holiday spirit maybe once the decorations go up. Umm soon. I dragged the boxes out. That's as far as I got.

Shelly's Peanut Butter Honey Yogurt Smoothie

8 oz. Milk (any Skim, Soy, Almond, Coconut, whatever you like)
1 scoop Vanilla Whey Protein Powder
2 Tablespoons Powdered Peanut Butter
2-3 Frozen Honey Yogurt Cubes

Place all ingredients in blender, and blend until smooth.

Powdered Peanut Butter is de-fatted peanut butter. About 85%-90% of the fat has been removed so it has the consistency of flour, in fact, it is sometimes called peanut flour. I used Chike PB.

How to make Honey Yogurt Cubes: Stir together 1-6 oz container of plain Greek Yogurt (I used Fage 0%) and 2 Tablespoons of Honey till well combined. You can use SF Torani too. Spoon into ice cube tray and freeze. Makes 6-8 cubes.

Time Saver: I often make Smoothie Bags on Sunday to make the week's breakfasts easier. I place all the ingredients except the milk of course in a snack sized baggie and toss in the freezer. On a busy morning, pull a baggie out, dump in blender, add milk.

More Eggface Favorite Protein Shakes and Smoothies

I had company. One of the 2 cats that have adopted my yard was sun bathing next to me...

Dinner: I made my Crockpot Carnitas the yesterday and had some leftovers (about 2 1/2 cups) I took those added some Chicken Broth (1 box) some sauteed zucchini and yellow crookneck squash (2 small, sliced) and turned it into a soup. Topped it with grated Cotija cheese. Total Grandma comfort food.

More Eggface Healthy Mexican Favorites

Snacks: Coffee including a stop at Starbucks for a Soy Latte and since the line was short I had them jazz it up a bit. I ordered a Hot, Grande, Soy Latte with 1 pump of Sugar Free Cinnamon Dolce and 2 pumps SF Vanilla. It was perfect, very Christmasy (if that's not a word it should be.)

In the evening, I watched a DVR'd episode of The Amazing Race (my favorite show) I'm behind an episode (no spoilers, my favorite team this time is Bethanny (Soul Surfer) and Adam. While I watched I snacked on this...

Shelly's Monkey Cereal Snack Mix

1/4 cup Cheerios Cereal (I used the Multigrain Dark Chocolate Crunch ones)
6-12 Almonds (I used 6 Blue Diamond Salted Caramel Almond)
5-6 pieces of Freeze-dried Banana (not dried, freeze dried, found it at Trader Joe's)

Mix together.

My Favorite Health and Fitness Apps

"What are some of your favorite health and fitness apps?" I get this question enough in my inbox I thought I'd put together a list. There's an App For That!

Here are some of my favorites:

RxmindMe, MFP, Lose It, Map My Walk, Sworkit,
Daily Workouts, Steps, Waterlogged, AllTrails, Simply Yoga
(left to right)

Calorie counters and diet tracker, track food intake and exercise, calculate recipe calories, set calorie goals. I love all three of these. I kind of wish I could take a little of each and build one that suits me.

My Fitness Pal (FREE)
Lose-it (FREE)
Sparkpeople (FREE)

Nothing like seeing your eating and exercise day in B&W. I know tracking is a pain but these apps make it pretty easy, you can usually see what needs to be adjusted pretty clearly and bottom-line they are effective...
A researcher at the University of Texas has published a study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research looking at efficacy of a free online weight loss program. The study looked at 1,258 randomly selected users of SparkPeople and found that those who entered their weight into the site at least four times per month lost an average of 11 pounds per month more than those that didn't, and those who made at least one post on the site’s forum during the time they used the site lost over three pounds more than those that didn't.
I am not as faithful in logging as I was in the first 2 years (daily then, I used Fitday.com online) now it's every few days or so. The study above is great motivation to do it more.

Waterlogged (FREE) Track your water intake. I love this one though I fully admit I rarely make my goal :( they need to create an app called Coffeelogged I'd ace that one.
RxMindMe (FREE) - Reminds you to take pills (or vitamins) This app changed my life! Seriously I never forget my vitamins and it's all because of this app.

Fooducate (FREE) - Helps people make more informed food choices, scans grocery items, create shopping lists, get alternative suggestions. I still eat things they hate from time to time because well I like whatever it is but knowledge is good.
CalorieKing (FREE) - Another food search database with carbs, fats, protein counts of foods.
Calorific (FREE-ish) - Shows pictures of "what 200 calories look like" on a plate, we all know most people suffer from portion distortion, this app confirms it. The basic collection of photos is free or pay a few bucks for more pictures.

I use these exercise apps often when weather conditions (triple digits) won't let me walk or hike. Also if you think a burpee is something a baby does after a bottle of milk these apps are great to for learning what certain exercises look like.

Daily Workouts (FREE) - Your own personal trainer with video instruction, 10-30 minute full body workouts, 50 targeted area exercises, a countdown clock.
Simply Yoga (FREE) – Video demonstrations of poses.
Sworkit (FREE) - Circuit training workouts with video instruction, 5-60 minute full body workouts.

Can't afford one of those fancy exercise wearable trackers (umm that would be me) here's a way to track steps on your phone: pedometer, step counter, tracks calories, distance, steps, they run in the background and suck battery life a bit but they are fun.

Have a friend or family member competition, who takes the most steps in the day, kids versus parents, winner chooses the movie on movie night.

Steps (FREE)
Moves (FREE)
EBWalk Everybody Walk (FREE)

Map My Walk (FREE) - Track your walks by GPS, integrates with My Fitness Pal.
The Walk ($2.99) - Walking adventure game. Most people have heard of Zombies, Run but since I'm not a runner (more like walk as briskly as I can with my short legs) I found this fun alternative.
AllTrails (FREE) - Find hiking trails near you, 50,000 trail guides. People rate the hikes but just remember one person's "easy" hike is another hard so look at grade and terrain info, learned my lesson glad I bring poles.

And a few for emotional health...

I meditate 15 minutes a day. I've been doing it a little over a year now and it's really helped my focus. Here are 2 fun tools I use:

Calm (FREE) - Guided Meditations.
Insight Timer (FREE) - Meditation Timer.

and I love a positive thought to start the day...

Daily Inspirational Quotes of the Day (FREE)

Oh but with all these great apps there are also a few hideous ones. Do me a solid and Sign The Petition to get rid of some of those.

Do you use phone apps in your healthy new life? Add it in the comments.

5 Healthy Protein Packed Pizza Snacks: Pizza Deviled Eggs

If you are looking for a protein packed, healthy snack to serve while you watch Monday Night Football, while you trim the tree or on family movie night (best family holiday movie ever.) Here's one to try: these Pizza Deviled Eggs are very kid friendly, they totally taste like pizza and you could even have the whippersnappers in the family help out making them.

Shelly's Pizza Deviled Eggs

6 Eggs (hard cooked and peeled)
1/4 cup Greek Yogurt
1/4 cup (plus a little for topping) Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
2 Tablespoons Sun Dried Tomatoes (not oil packed), chopped fine
2 Tablespoons (plus a few sliced for topping) Black Olives
1/2 teaspoon Oregano
1/2 teaspoon Salt
dash or two of Black Pepper
Toppings: a few sliced black olives, mini pepperoni rounds, shredded cheese

Hard boil eggs and when they are cool enough, peel them or use those ready to eat, hard cooked, peeled eggs (Eggland's Best, Trader Joes, Costco) for a little time saver, no waiting for them to cool or peeling. Cut eggs in half lengthwise. Set whites aside on a serving platter. Place yolks in a bowl with the yogurt. Mash with a fork till smooth. Add cheese, sun dried tomatoes, chopped black olives and seasonings. Mix till well combined. Spoon mixture back into the hole of each egg white. Garnish eggs with "pizza toppings" a few mini pepperoni slices, a sliced black olive, a few shreds of cheese.
