Join me!

Losing 158 pounds has been life changing. I feel like I have been blessed with a second chance and I just want to celebrate this healthy new life every day.

Last month, I was thinking it would be fun to celebrate my weight loss by donating one non-perishable food item for every pound I've lost to my local food bank. I set aside a few bucks, collected coupons, trolled sale papers and I'm excited to announce I met my 158 item goal and will be donating all this tomorrow...

This was so much fun. I'm so excited to drop it off. I decided to post about it on the blog in hopes others will want do the same thing or something similar. Think about it... if we each took on a project like this what an awesome impact we would make as a community.

If you don't want to donate food, maybe you could do toiletry items (toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo) or clothing. Maybe cans of dog and cat food to your animal shelter. Maybe donate $1 for every pound lost to a favorite cause. May I suggest the Obesity Action Coalition. Maybe you could donate volunteer hours to your local senior center or hospice or something near and dear to your heart. The possibilities are endless and exciting. I hope you will join me. If you email me a picture or let me know what you've done I'll give it a huge shout out on the blog.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. ~Margaret Mead

Awesome! I did a donation of 100 pounds of protein foods (tuna, peanut butter, etc) to the food bank to celebrate losing 100 pounds, and on my surgery anniversary I donate 124 pounds to celebrate my total weight lost. (Next donation in Feb - will send a photo.) It is REALLY fun to take a picture of yourself next to the poundage in food as a visual guide to what you are no longer carrying around with you every day!

Well, I do most of those types of donations all year long. And I haven't lost enough weight to make much of a diff.

But an additional item I do is: Once or twice a year I take my spare change jar to the bank, let my blog buddies guess how much it totalled, then donate the money to a charity chosen by the closest guess (http://leendadll.wordpress.com/2011/12/03/guess-how-much-is-in-the-bag-of-spare-change/). This year was $102.49 to Heifer.org

This is a brilliant idea! My local food pantry ran out of food this past summer, so I am making an effort to support them year round. After my surgery I will definitely follow your good example.

Great idea!! I like Dee's clothing donation spin-off idea as well. While I'm only a pre-op (12 days and counting down) I have clothes that already dont fit after losing 35 lbs.
Thank you Shelly for blogging your journey and experiences. It is inspirational.

What a great idea! I just had surgery on December 13. So far I've lost 24 pounds. So I'll collect 24 items to donate. I'll send a picture when I get it together!

What a wonderful way to celebrate. You are so creative and so giving. I'm sure that the recipients of your 158 gifts will be amazingly blessed. My 1 year surgiversary will be in May. I think I will wait until that time to follow in your footsteps in hope of a bigger total. I'm at 112 right now with a bit more to go. Thanks for sharing!

My husband and I were banded on December 19th 2011 and together we have lost 78 lbs.... we're just getting started, but count us in. I'll be cutting coupons this weekend and we'll send along our picture next week! Thank you for such a wonderful idea!

You look amazing, and I love this idea! Now... which 80+ items am I going to donate?! :)

I do regular deductions off my pay for our local food bank, but I love this way of expressing my gratitude for my own weight loss so much, I'm in! That makes for a whopping 180 items (so far, still more to lose), but I am not going to collect and do it en masse. Yesterday night at the grocery store I started with my first 10 items, and I'll add a little at a time over the next few months... and continue as I loose more. :)

Awesome! I will do the same. Going to decide if I will do an item for each pound or items that total the same weight as my pounds lost. Either way... it'll be fun! Thanks for the inspiration! xoxo

I love that all of this is good, healthy food options. No junk, no candy, etc...

I'm gathering my 152 items as we speak!
